Browser Settings


By adjusting your browser settings, you can optimize your browser for WebCT.

Setting the Browser Cache | Top

To ensure that you are viewing the most current version of your WebCT course, set your browser to update cached pages regularly.

For Internet Explorer 5.x and higher:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
  3. Under Check for newer versions of stored pages, select Automatically.
  4. Click OK. The Internet Options window appears.
  5. Click OK. The cache setting is updated.

For Netscape Navigator 6.2 and higher:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. In the Category section, under Advanced, select Cache.
  3. Under Compare the page in the cache to the page on the network, select one of the following:
    • If working in Netscape Navigator 6.2.x, select automatically.
    • If working in Netscape Navigator 7.0.x, select when the page is out of date.
  4. Click OK. The cache setting is updated.

Enabling Java™ | Top

To ensure that Whiteboard, Chat, the WebEQ Equation Editor, and the HTML editor function correctly, you must enable Java on your browser.

For Internet Explorer 5.x and higher:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click Custom Level. The Security Settings window appears.
  4. Scroll down to Microsoft VM, and under Java permissions, select one of the following safety settings:
    • High safety
    • Low safety
    • Medium safety
  5. Click OK. A confirmation message appears.
  6. Click Yes. The Internet Options window appears.
  7. Click OK. The Java setting is updated.

For Netscape Navigator 7.0:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. In the Category section, select Advanced.
  3. Ensure that Enable Java is selected.
  4. Click OK. The Java setting is updated.

For Netscape Navigator 6.x:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. In the Category section, select Advanced.
  3. Ensure that Enable Java and Enable Javascript are selected.
  4. Click OK. The Java setting is updated.

Enabling Cookies | Top

Your browser must have cookies enabled to log in to WebCT.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. If using a default setting (Default button is depressed), move the slider to select one of the following privacy settings:
    • Medium High
    • Medium
    • Low
    • Accept all cookies
  4. If using a custom setting, click Advanced:
    1. Select Override automatic cookie handling
    2. Select Always allow session cookies
    3. Click OK. The Internet Options window appears.
  5. Click Apply and then click OK. The cookie settings are updated.

For Internet Explorer 5.x:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Under Custom, click Custom Level. The Security settings window appears.
  4. Scroll down to the Cookies section.
  5. Under Allow cookies that are stored on your computer, select Enable.
  6. Under Allow per-session cookies, select Enable.
  7. Click OK. A warning message appears.
  8. Click OK. The Internet Options window appears.
  9. Click OK. The cookie settings are updated.

For Netscape Navigator 7.0:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. In the Category section, under Privacy and Security, select Cookies.
  3. Select one of the following:
    • Enable cookies for the originating website only
    • Enable cookies based on privacy settings (Note: To view your privacy settings, click View)
    • Enable all cookies
  4. Click OK. The cookie settings are updated.

For Netscape Navigator 6.x:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. In the Category section, under Privacy and Security, select Cookies.
  3. Select one of the following:
    • Enable cookies for the originating website only
    • Enable all cookies
  4. Click OK. The cookie settings are updated.
